HistoryNelson Piquet Junior was promoted from official Renault F1 test driver to drive alongside double World Champion Fernando Alonso. The son of three-time World Champion Nelson Piquet, he won the British Formula 3 Championship in 2004 and took second place to Lewis Hamilton in the 2006 GP2 championship. Renault was first involved in Formula One in 1977 with a single car entry at the British Grand Prix. The team's drivers in its early years in Formula One included RenĂ© Arnoux, Alain Prost and Derek Warwick. Renault left Formula One at the end of the 1986 season returning as an engine supplier to Williams between 1989 and 1997 and Benetton between 1995 and 1997.
